Texas A&M Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)
The Texas A&M AIChE student chapter is a chemical engineering professional organization. Involvement in AIChE leads to a variety of activities that allow for lifelong learning, such as company presentations, student socials and service projects, and professional development opportunities. I joined AIChE to continually learn about the Chemical Engineering industry from company representatives and to strengthen my relationships with fellow chemical engineers at Texas A&M. Below are some examples of how I have become a leader in the Texas A&M Chapter of AIChE.
Mentor Program Chair (August 2015 - May 2016)
This year I am the AIChE Mentor Program Chair, which involves pairing underclassmen with upperclassmen mentors to learn about Texas A&M, Chemical Engineering, and Career Opportunities. More details about the Texas A&M Mentorship Program can be found at our website (http://aiche.tamu.edu/mentorship). I look forward to what the year has in store and will update what I accomplish at the end of the year. (To Be Added)

Student Relations Chair for the 2014 AIChE Sophomore Retreat (January - August 2014)
Before attending my class year's AIChE Sophomore retreat, I honestly had considered switching majors because I did not know a lot of students in Chemical Engineering, companies seemed far reaching, and schoolwork seemed stressful. However, after attending, I never looked back because the friends I made became my social buddies and my study buddies. The upperclassmen I met give generous, helpful advice when I need it most. Furthermore, the companies that took the time to present were really cool, made internships and co-ops seem attainable, and exemplified the diverse work that Chemical Engineers can do. Everything I gained has motivated me to serve on this year's Retreat Committee to give the rising Sophomores as great of an experience as I had!
Currently, as the Student Relations Chair, I am responsible for encouraging students to sign up for the retreat. In order to encourage students to join the AIChE retreat, I help my Events And Outreach Chair plan fun events for the Sophomores to learn more about the AIChE Sophomore Retreat and to meet fellow Chemical Engineering classmates. What makes me great for this role is my positive attitude. I genuinely want rising Sophomores to learn more about the retreat and attend because I want to share the impact it had on me. In addition to planning fun events, I make announcements and advertisements on our online Facebook page and in the students' engineering classes to communicate about upcoming events and related information. In order to maximize the message of my graphics, I use effective design rationale. For example, the graphic I created to the left clearly demonstrates how to register for the retreat since our committee was receiving questions on this topic. Lastly, I helped my team brainstorm events for the retreat. One of the teamwork building games I suggested is a partner water balloon toss contest to see which group can toss the water balloon the farthest. This teamwork game fosters teamwork, creative thinking, and laughter. Lastly, we reached out to more companies to encourage them to be a part of the retreat and/or sponsor it so that this year's students could learn even more and have a great experience.
Overall, due to the planning and execution by my team, the 2014 AIChE Sophomore Retreat was phenomenal! I made lots of new Chemical Engineering friends, learned about several companies, and enjoyed all the events. I continued to mentor the next set of retreat officers for the 2015 AIChE Sophomore Retreat. They have done a great job this past year planning, and I can't wait to see the success of the retreat this August 2015!

Membership Chair (January - May 2013)
As Membership Chair, I had the opportunity to design ways to promote involvement and keep track of member points. To promote membership, we give members points for participating in events and meetings. Each point wins a member a raffle ticket into prize drawings. This year the top prize was an Ipad Mini. All officers encourage members to bring their point cards to events to get a signature. At the end of year, we collect the cards or sign in sheets and calculate the sum total points for each member. One way I made the process more efficient was by creating an Excel Visual Basic program that calculates the sum total points for a member based on the number of events he or she has attended. Then, the program prints the member's name as many times as the sum, which I then printed, cut, and entered into the raffle drawing. It was as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Furthermore, as Membership Chair, I helped work our biweekly lobby sales in Jack E. Brown. To enhance the lobby sales, I made posters detailing our sales and upcoming meetings Additionally, I encouraged passing students to sign up for membership and to buy merchandise. Our most popular item was definitely the engineering paper! Our organization also opened up an online store where members can sign up for events and purchase merchandise. Because of my leadership skills, The AIChE Team put me in charge of our online store, so I could go in and add events, merchandise, and collect store history. For example, I set up a link for rising Sophomores, like myself, to register for the AIChE Sophomore Retreat in August 2013. Our online store will definitely continue to improve as we learn about more ways to use it!
Lastly, I had the opportunity to attend the Spring 2013 AIChE Regional Conference at Texas Tech University. This was the first time I really got to meet some of my team members. The conference was a great way to unite our organization officers and to learn new ways to work collaboratively to improve our organization. At the conference, while communicating improvement ideas for next year, I came up with a new way to keep track of member points instead of using point cards. I strategized creating small hole punched laminated cards that can go on a key chain (similar to the ones you get for stores) in order to keep track of member points, especially since paper cards are so easy to lose and damage. Overall, I enjoyed my leadership role as Membership Chair and hope to continue to find ways to promote involvement in AIChE to network with more fellow Chemical Engineers!
